Championed and passed an innovative “height bonus” ordinance to encourage more affordable apartments downtown

Successfully sponsored numerous tenants’ rights ordinances, including to strengthen Madison’s rent abatement program

Fought for greater safety regulation for locks, fire protection, and increased housing inspections to keep residents safe

Consistent supporter of robust funding for the City’s Affordable Housing Fund that assists in the creation of new affordable units

Worked to ensure a ‘Housing First’ model to secure access to shelter for unhoused members of our community
Equity

Authored an ordinance to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana and forgave thousands of dollars in fines for prior possession convictions

Leader in providing protections for LGBTQ+ individuals across Madison.

Instituted paid parental leave for all City employees

Sponsored expanding sexual and reproductive health services in Madison

Authored an ordinance that created downtown quiet zones to restrict train horn noise

Encouraged all downtown developers to maximize energy efficiency, green features, and reduce stormwater runoff to the lakes in their building plans

Combatted climate change through the adopted Madison Sustainability Plan to reduce CO2 pollution, to increase renewable energy, and to achieve net-zero carbon goals

Worked to preserve existing downtown trees and to plant more large shade trees appropriate to our changing climate

Championed the Clean Lakes, Clean Streets program to provide for weekly street sweeping to protect our lakes from harmful pollutants
Transportation

Strongly advocated for the creation and expansion of the efficient Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system

Championed the creation of Metro Transit Route 75 from downtown to Verona

Fought to bring future Amtrak service to downtown Madison to connect us to the rest of the region

Led efforts to create a future intercity bus terminal in the Lake Street parking ramp

Added miles of bike lanes, paths, and pedestrian improvements to improve the public health and safety of the community
